Mandira is Senior Water Resources Specialist at ICIMOD and has worked at ICIMOD since 2001 as a subject matter expert as well as a Programme Coordinator.

She has over 25 years of research experience covering broad areas of climate services, disaster risk reduction and water resources management.

Her main areas of expertise include transboundary flood forecasting and monitoring, application of satellite-based products, regional cooperation, hydrological modelling, early warning systems and end user engagement for reduced risks and increased resilience.

Mandira holds a Doctorate in Engineering from the Kyoto University, Japan, Master’s in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle, USA and a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.

She is one of the Coordinating Lead Authors of the chapter on Disaster Risk Reduction and Building Resilience in the Hindu Kush Himalaya of the HKH Assessment (2019), and a contributing author of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (2019) and the Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (2022).

How do you protect the pulse of the planet?

A:

I work with partners across the HKH region and beyond to strengthen capacities, and build awareness and knowledge for disaster risk reduction. My work allows me to enhance partners’ capacity to reduce disaster risk and contribute to sustainable growth and a safe environment.

Q:

What is your favourite part of the work you do at ICIMOD?

A:

One of the reasons I enjoy working at ICIMOD is that it brings together people from diverse cultures and disciplines. I also enjoy working with a wide range of partners outside of ICIMOD.

Q:

What are you passionate about?

A:

From a very young age, I was passionate about issues related to water and the environment. I enjoyed learning about nature, particularly water resources.
