such a practice should be interpreted in terms of 'traditional ecological knowledge' ,often known as ("TEK" theory). "TEK" as a modern concept has its birth in the marriage of ethnobiology and human ecology. Such kind of study should be carried out by ecological/environmental anthropologist to bring out the symbolic and ecological sifnificance of the event.

Great images ! Rabindra has the rare ability to capture the intimate aspects of rural Nepalese life that very few people tend to appreciate. These pictures are beautiful, authentic and are rich in both technique and subject. I am from Humla and looking back home through these images reminds me of the possibility of a way of life that appreciates our diverse nature and culture in its true form.

Rabindra,
Eye catching motion of the Dhami. It is one of the forms of animistic and shamanistic practice of local tradition in many parts of the Himalayan communities. It can also be refered as the remnants of Bon practices.

Description of photo:

In Humla local Dhamis come together to celebrate Shrawan Purnima [during the month of August] every year. This is a major festival in Humla. This year, they celebrated it without any hesitation with peaceful manner. This was possible after the peace accord between Government of Nepal and CPN-Maoist which encourages Dhamis to resume their cultural heritage. They call this event Dhami Paturne.

In the picture, Dhami is jumping and ready for throwing cucumber at the religious audiences. He threw it randomly. The person - who is able to catch it – is believed to be fortunate for a whole year and blessed to have baby boy within a year at his/her house.

The picture was captured at Thulo Madu Hilchha [Elevation: 2776m; Longitude: N29́° 59́́́́́́́́́́́́́́́́' 04.8"; Latitude: E81° 46́́́́́́' 02.8"] in Syanda village, Syanda Village Development Committee [VDC], Humla district - the remotest district of Nepal adjoining to Tibet, China..
