DG’s message

Momentum for Change
Momentum for Change is an initiative spearheaded by the UN Climate Change secretariat to shine a light on the enormous groundswell of activities underway across the globe that are moving the world toward a highly resilient, low-carbon future. Momentum for Change recognizes innovative and transformative solutions that address both climate change and wider economic, social and environmental challenges. Lighthouse Activities under the Momentum for change draw attention to the most inspiring and transformational mitigation and adaptation activities under four focus areas –

Urban Poor
Women for Results
Finance for Climate Friendly Investment, and
ICT Solutions

ICIMOD’s Community Based Flood Early Warning system (CB-FEWS) has received the Momentum of Change award under the ICT Solutions category, which recognizes climate actions based on innovative use of information and communication technology. CB-FEWS is a great example of how ICT can be used to help communities cope with the effects of climate change. The project is being implemented in the catchments of two rivers, the Jiadhal in Dhemaji District and the Singora in Lakhimpur District, in the Eastern Brahmaputra River Basin (EBRB), in partnership with Aaranyak, India and Sustainable Eco Engineering, Nepal under the Himalayan Climate Change Adaptation Programme (HICAP).

Organizers: NASA and ICIMOD
Date: 11 December 2014
Time: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Place: The USA Pavilion, Zone F
As a consequence of climate change, threats such as glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are becoming more frequent and posing increased risks to mountain communities.  Increased glacier melt is also a concern to future water availability, both locally and regionally. NASA has partnered with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), which is examining the changes in glaciers and glacial lakes in different basins in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region and potential impacts on towns and cities within the region. This side session will discuss different activities from NASA’s portfolio related to glacier change and hazards, as well as ICIMOD’s activities using satellite and field-based information. This side session will also provide current and relevant examples from the field in Nepal based on research occurring through an ongoing NASA SERVIR Applied Sciences Team project.
