Abstract
This CD-ROM presents and illustrates the goal, objectives, key problems,
and major activities of PARDYP: the People and Resource Dynamics
in the Middle Mountain Watersheds of the Hindu Kush-Himalayas project.
PARDYP is a regional research for development project funded by
SDC, IDRC, and ICIMOD and implemented in five watersheds in China,
India, Nepal, and Pakistan in collaboration with lead institutions
and international partners. The aim is to contribute to balanced,
sustainable, and equitable development of mountain communities and
families by providing a basic understanding of natural resources’
degradation processes and recommending proven strategies and programmes
for community and farm-based prevention of degradation and rehabilitation
of natural resources. The activities include agronomic and horticultural
initiatives; socioeconomic and market studies; studies of geology,
soil fertility, water and erosion, and land use dynamics; and rehabilitation
of degraded land and forestry and participatory conservation activities.
The CD-ROM includes the base line information, overview, and comparison
of the five watersheds; including biophysical and socioeconomic
characteristics; methods and approaches to examine linkages between
people and resources; problems and key issues within and between
watersheds; identification of common indicators to characterise
and compare watersheds; and documentation of successful intervention
strategies and their applicability to other watersheds in the region.

Abstract
In the recent past, there has been continuing growth in use of
GIS and related technologies by many organisations engaged in planning
and management of the Kathmandu Valley. As a result, the demand
for accurate and homogenous spatial data of the Valley has been
realised by government as well as research and development organisations.
This study attempts to build a comprehensive GIS Database of the
Kathmandu Valley. It employs a fresh approach in constructing a
GIS database with the available maps and integrates many different
kinds of satellite imagery.

The primary mandate of ICIMOD is documentation and
information exchange. Recent breakthroughs in information technology
have offered the Centre the challenge and the opportunity of rethinking
the design and distribution of its information.
Primarily to archive ICIMOD's publications from
1990 onwards and also to give a pictorial perspective of the Hindu
Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region, ICIMOD took the initiative of producing
the first ICIMOD CD-ROM, a substantial information package, using
multimedia .
Publications
are displayed in an electronic book format, for instance, by clicking
the mouse button on the appropriate section in the Table of Contents,
the required text appears. The search facility section serves as
a computerised library catalogue.
Publications can be found on the basis of author's
name, book title, keyword search, or year published. The entire
CD-ROM is based on a user-friendly, fully functional Windows' environment,
single digital medium. It introduces ICIMOD and its activities throughout
the HKH region.
The CD-ROM contains about 30,000 pages of text/tables,
1,600 figures, 400 photographs, 500 GIS-generated maps, about 30
minutes of video clips, and 45 minutes of audio. The CD-ROM has
an interactive system, so that even a layman can surf through its
contents.
