This section looks at the literacy level of household members. It also gives information about the number of households with children not attending school and the reasons behind this.
Only 10% of the total households surveyed did not have any male members (aged 6 and above) who could read or write. In contrast, 24% of the households did not have any female members (aged 6 and above) who were able to read or write.
In general, the percentage of children not attending school was low (3%). In households with children not attending school, the two most commonly stated reasons were because children were required to do housework or that the household could not afford the educational fees.
Although Jajarkot had the highest percentage of households without any literate male members, the percentage of male children in the district not attending school was one of the lowest among the surveyed districts. The percentage of households without any literate female members and those with female children not attending school were higher in Saptari, Jajarkot, Bajhang, Sindhupalchok, and Humla.
