At the request of Apis cerana beekeepers in Dagana, Sarpang, and Tsirang districts in southern Bhutan and of the Renewable Natural Resources Research and Development Centre – ICIMOD’s partner organization in the honeybee project in Bhutan – an ‘Advanced Training on Beekeeping Management with a Focus on Queen Rearing Management’ was organized from 1 to 18 March 2012 in Dagapela in Dagana district, Bhutan. A consultant trainer, AN Shukla, conducted the training. Twenty-six participants including 22 men and 4 women came from four districts in southern Bhutan (Dagana, Sarpang, Samtse, and Tsirang) to participate in the training. The participants were a mixed group ranging from grassroots beekeepers to more experienced beekeepers and government staff. It was a challenge as well as a learning experience for the trainer to deal with participants with such diverse needs and levels of understanding.
