8 March: International Women's Day 2012 – Celebrating and Inspiring Futures of Mountain Women

On the occasion of International Women's Day 2012, ICIMOD organized a series of activities at it Headquarters to honour, highlight, and promote women's role and contribution in the equitable and sustainable wellbeing of the people of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region. This year's celebration included a keynote address by Dr David Molden, Director General of ICIMOD, followed by a panel on ‘Celebrating Achievements and Strategizing New Futures for Gender Positive Change in Mountain Contexts’, where gender experts and grassroots champions from local, national, regional, and international contexts shared their experiences on women's achievements and success. Other attractions included the annual International Women’s Day cake-cutting ceremony, a women’s power lunch, and the Second Annual Gender Champions Award ceremony. The Gender Champions Award is becoming an important tool for collective learning on gender integration at both the organizational and programmatic levels. This year, Dr Mandira Shrestha and Prem Manandhar were awarded in the individual category and the Integrated Forest Ecosystems and Watershed Services Action Area in the team category. A traditional dance by the children of Maiti Nepal, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of sex trafficking, capped off the event.

A message from ICIMOD’s Director General, ‘Celebrating and Inspiring Futures of Mountain Women’, was issued and two articles by ICIMOD employees – ‘Empowering women, unlearning old ways, inspiring futures for young women’ by Dr Suman Bisht and ‘Like a spear, When natural hazards strike, it’s the women who suffer the most’ by Anita Karki –were published in local dailies on 8 March.
