The Youth for Sustainable Mountain Development (Y4SMD) initiative, implemented by ICIMOD’s Asia Pacific Mountain Network (APMN) with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC), has been promoting youth engagement in advocacy for the mountain agenda in the context of Rio+20 throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The Rio+20 working group of Y4SMD has become the largest youth group working towards Rio+20 in the region and the only youth group advocating for the mountain agenda at global level. With 1,650 Facebook likes and 555 virtual community members, the group has contributed notably to Rio+20 with two submissions to the UNCSD Secretariat (Asia Pacific Youth Position Paper Towards Rio+20 and Asia Pacific Youth Declaration on Climate Change and Sustainable Development), a dedicated blog, and a number of articles. In recent years, ICIMOD, through APMN, has also trained more than 200 young people and 50 media persons from 17 Asia Pacific countries on climate change and green economy.
