ICIMOD’s beekeeping project is working towards improving livelihoods through strengthening the honey production base and market linkages by building human and institutional capacities in Bandarban District, Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. ICIMOD works in collaboration with the partner organisations ECo Development (Ethnic Community Development Organisation) in Bandarban; PAJURECO (Parbattya Jumia Punarbashan Paribesh Sangrakkhan) in Khagrachari; ASHIKA (Adivasi Shikhya Kaaj) in Rangamati districts in Chittagong Hill Tracts; and BIA in Dhaka. The project and partners jointly conducted a training of trainers course, ‘Strengthening the Honey Production Base and Market Linkages with a Special Focus on Beekeeping Management for Honey Production and Pollination; and the Harvesting, Processing, Value Addition and Quality of Honey and other Bee Products’ in Bandarban from 18-27 September 2011. The main objective of this training is to strengthen honey production by building the capacity of partners and progressive beekeepers, as trainers in beekeeping management, bee flora and pollination and production, harvesting, processing and value addition of honey and other bee products.  The project engaged resource persons for this training from ICIMOD, Kathmandu and Dhaka in addition to local resource persons, and uses a training curriculum developed by the project and partners and approved by the concerned authorities in Bangladesh.

Eighteen participants were invited from all three districts in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Three of these were women. It is hoped that this training will assist women in adopting beekeeping as an important income generating activity and will also help to conserve wild bee colonies. Traditionally, farmers here collect honey by hunting wild bee colonies, which ends up destroying the entire colony.
