11 - 14 July: 4th Joint Project Team Meeting for Sentinel Asia Step-2


Mr Deo Raj Gurung from MENRIS attended the 4th Joint Project Team Meeting of Sentinel Asia Step-2 (JPTM2011) held in Putrajaya, Malaysia, from 11-14 July 2011. It was jointly organised by JAXA; the Malaysian National Security Council (MKN); the United Nations Economic and Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP); the Malaysian National Space Agency (ANGKASA); and Sentinel Asia. There were 87 participants from 60 different organisations, mostly from Asia-Pacific countries, UN-ESCAP, and the UN-SPIDER Beijing office. All ICIMOD regional member countries were represented except Afghanistan.

  • The objectives of the meeting were to promote sharing and exchange of expertise, technical capabilities, information and experiences in using space-based technology to manage disaster, and networking among participating countries. Mr Gurung gave a presentation on ‘Glaciers, glacial lakes and GLOF mapping and monitoring in the Hindu Kush-Himalayas’ focusing on ICIMOD’s activities for the same.

The highlights of the meeting can be summarised in the points set out below.

  • Sentinel Asia Step II to conclude soon and Step III is being planned.
  • ALOS satellite system was terminated in May 2011, ALOS II and ALOS III is planned for 2013 and 2015 respectively.
  • Sentinel Asia to provide ALOS archive data until next launches, and data from other participating space agencies.
  • Sentinel Asia and International Disaster Charter (IDC) entered into formal collaboration in October 2010, making possible for members of the Sentinel Asia/ Joint Project Team to activate IDC. This must be done through Sentinel Asia framework.
  • New tsunami working group to be constituted under the Sentinel Asia framework.
