Training on GIS using QGIS 3.4 and drainage modelling using HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS

SANDEE–ICIMOD is implementing a research project titled “The Economics of Solid Waste Management and Drainage: Sustainable Approach to Making South Asian Cities Climate-Resilient (2017–2019)” in Bharatpur Metropolitan City of Nepal and Sylhet Metropolitan City of Bangladesh, under the Climate Change and Cities programme of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada. This project is conducting drainage network modelling and economic analysis of solid waste and drainage management systems.

In addition, this project aims to help municipal staff engage in climate change adaptation activities by making better system-level decisions based on tools such as geographic information systems (GIS) and hydrodynamic/drainage network modelling. The project’s methodology and results may contribute to facilitating urban planning, particularly to address water-logging issues in towns and cities in Nepal’s Terai region.

This training on GIS using QGIS 3.4 and drainage modelling using HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS has accordingly been designed to share the project’s learnings and transfer modelling skills to officials from five municipalities in the Terai region.
