Government of West Bengal commits to Kangchenjunga Landscape Conservation and Development Initiative

On 28 March 2014, representatives from ICIMOD and the GB Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development (GBPIHED), ICIMOD’s focal institution in India, met officials from the Department of Forest of West Bengal to appraise them of the Kangchenjunga Landscape Conservation and Development Initiative and seek their support. Dr Hemant Badola, the nodal person from GBPIHED, and Dr Nakul Chettri, Programme Coordinator at ICIMOD, met Mr Azam Zaidi, Principal Chief Conservation of Forest (General); Mr NC Bahuguna, Principal Chief Conservation of Forest and Head of Forest Force; and Mr Ujjwal Bhattacharyya, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Wildlife and Chief Wildlife Warden Government of West Bengal to explain the programme. Dr Badola and Dr Chettri also met Mr Subesh Kumar Das, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Forest of West Bengal, in the presence of Mr Zaidi and Mr NC Bahuguna, in the Forest Secretariat at Kolkata. 

The officials were briefed on this important transboundary landscape programme including the rationale for the landscape approach, process for implementation, and progress made so far. The briefing highlighted the programme’s achievements, such as the inclusion of Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling within the proposed landscape, the high-level meeting in Delhi, various consultation processes, and progress on the feasibility assessment report.  

Mr Das and other officials from the Department of Forest of West Bengal were very positive about the programme. Mr Das was happy to know that the programme has a strong livelihood dimension as a key focus area. He also welcomed the implementation of the programme on the ground at the earliest.
